Regional Renewable Resource Committee

The Regional Renewable Resources Committee (RRRC) is comprised of the Presidents, or their representatives, of each of the community based Renewable Resource Councils (RRCs). The main function of the RRRC would be to identify renewable resource management ideas and concerns of their respective RRCs and through joint discussion with the other representatives on the committee develop and prioritize projects for SRRB consideration. Further, the committee acts as a liaison organization between the SRRB and RRCs. The Committee meets when necessary and sends a representative of the committee to attend the SRRB Board meeting to present the committee's findings to the Board. Financial and administrative support for the RRRC is provided and controlled by the SRRB.

Great Bear Lake Advisory Group

In August 1986, the Great Bear Lake Management Committee was established to assess the health of Great Bear Lake fishing and make recommendations on total allowable harvest and allocation to users. Initial work of the committee focused on developing the Great Bear Lake Management Plan, reducing catch and possession limits for most species on the lake, and creating the use of Special Licenses. In November 1994, the committee ceased to function. The Community of Deline and the Sahtu Tribal Council wished to see the committee continue in some capacity in order to deal with management issues on Great Bear Lake. The SRRB is mandated by the Sahtu Dene-Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement to determine whether to reestablish a committee in respect of Great Bear Lake (13.8.42).The Great Bear Lake Advisory Group was established to report to and provide advice to the SRRB regarding issues related to Great Bear Lake. Members of the committee include: Deline Renewable Resource Council, Department of Fisheries & Oceans, Department of Resources, Wildlife & Economic Development and SRRB.In October 2002, the Great Bear Lake Working Group was formed to establish a special management regime for the lake and its watershed, which included members from the Great Bear Lake Advisory Group. The Working Group convened in Déline during March 2003 to discuss a management framework, which deals with the roles and responsibilities of different bodies in managing the lake, and with the principles by which it will be managed. The Working Group continues work to design and implement a management plan for Great Bear Lake and its watershed.

The Working Group convened in Déline during January 2004 to discuss two important sections of the draft management plan: the Cultural and Ecological Research and Monitoring plan and the Policies and Prohibitions. The SRRB contracted Northern Environmental Consulting and Analysis to prepare the “Great Bear Lake: State of Knowledge of the Terrestrial Environment” (March 2004). Future work for this Working Group will be to discuss additional items for the draft management plan, such as conservation zones, waste site clean-up, information and mapping.
