Canadian Peatland Database - Bogs

The Canadian Peatland Database contains information on the nature and distribution of peatland in Canada. There is an estimated 154 GT of carbon in Canadian peatlands, 95% of which is found in boreal, subarctic, and arctic areas (Tarnocai, 1998). Sixty percent of the area of Canadian peatlands is expected to be severely, to extremely severely, affected by climate warming caused by a doubling of CO2 (Kettles and Tarnocai, 2000). The work is on-going and accessible on-line. It is also available from the Geological Survey of Canada as Geological Survey of Canada Open File 3834. The Open File includes a 1/6.5 million-scale map using the database.

Major areas of peatlands were delineated in the 1970s Geological Survey of Canada surficial maps (1: 250 000 scale) generated for the Mackenzie valley corridor. A database and map were developed by the authors, based on information from the 1970s maps and some new air photo interpretation. Dataset consists of i) a digital peatland database, distributed in ARC/EXPORT format (e00) and ESRI Shape format (shp), found under the directory/folder "data", ii) an ESRI plot file (gra) and an Acrobat document (pdf) of the Peatlands of the Mackenzie Valley Map, called “peatmap” found under the directory/folder "pub", iii) a readme file in HTML and ASCII formats at the root directory/folder level.

The distribution and observed trends of wild Rangifer populations throughout the circumpolar Arctic (data from the wild Circum Arctic Rangifer Monitoring and Assessment Network, CARMA). Note: Wild boreal forest reindeer have not been mapped by CARMA and thus are not represented here

The CanVec product will be maintained in partnership with the organizations providing the data. CanVec is scheduled to be published by edition (or release) twice a year. Saturated soil (water saturated areas where ther is no drainage).

Range Maps for all Migratory Bird Species At Risk within the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Extensive point observation data collected by the Canadian Wildlife Service helped to identify breeding ranges for Migratory Bird Species at Risk in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Note: Olive Sided Flycatcher, Common Nighthawk, Rusy Blackbird, and Eskimo Curlew ranges represented in this dataset are located within the sahtú area.
