40051 OziExplorer Map Data

OziExplorer files. From the report, "In 2008, the Tulít’a District Land Corporation (TDLC), Parks Canada and the World Wildlife Fund established a partnership to conduct a cultural assessment of the proposed Nááts’i hch’oh National Park Reserve and Shúhtagot’i ne Néné National Wildlife Area, both of which lie within the Tulít’a District. A traditional knowledge study was planned to form part of this cultural assessment, involving partnerships with the Tulít’a Land Corporation, Fort Norman Métis Land Corporation, and Norman Wells Land Corporation. The study was coordinated by Bluestone Consultants, with support from SENES Consultants. Study design was collaboratively developed, with core direction from the TDLC and community researchers. The study will serve as a knowledge base for developing management plans and educational materials related to the National Park Reserve and National Wildlife Area. The key objectives of the study were fourfold: to document peoples’ knowledge of the Nááts’i hch’oh and Shúhtagot’i ne Néné areas; to establish a central archive for the education of present and future generations; and to build community research capacity.
Mapping is the core of this study, and has been a massive undertaking involving collection of existing data, GIS training for 3 community researchers and 18 high school students, digitizing hard copy maps based on a focus group meeting and interviews in Tulít’a and Norman Wells, and coding the maps for analysis. Fifty-two people were interviewed, bringing the total number of community participants including researchers, students and interviewees to 73. Nine people participated in a focus group and one extended interview during on on-the-land trip at Tets’ehxe (Drum Lake). There was a search of databases at the NWT Archives, and relevant documents were digitally scanned and printed. Another major project involved collection of existing digital map data from a variety of sources. Finally, a compressed verification phase involved focus groups and one-on-one sessions with participants in Norman Wells and Tulít’a, as well as public feasts in both communities to celebrate the project. The outcome is a “State of Traditional Knowledge” for the study area."
